Commandments – Day 3

Exodus 20:4-6

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in Heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.

The Thought

This must be one of the most controversial passages in all the Bible. It is good to remind ourselves that it was written by God. He knew that we would be tempted to forget Him and that demons would constantly try to deter us from our relationship with Jesus.

Sadly, the very people Moses was leading towards their Promised Land, those who had seen the miraculous way they were rescued from slavery in Egypt, committed this very sin of idolatry led by Aaron, the High priest who was Moses’ brother!

In Exodus 32, we read that Moses was detained by The Lord on Mount Sinai. So the people made a golden calf, calling it the god of Israel! How sad!

Many people in France, where I live, have statues at home. But many are serious “on-fire” believers. They agree with me that those things are not to be worshipped. They are souvenirs of a grandparent, and are simply a reminder of a good person who has followed Jesus, or a symbol of Jesus Himself and what He did for us. Before we judge others we must remember that God is the judge of all our hearts.

Action

Remember and pray today about the words of Jesus. Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? (Matthew 7:1-3).

Dare to ask God if there is anything in your home that He does not approve of.
