Commandments – Day 2

Exodus 20:2-3

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.

The Thought

This first commandment out of the ten that God gave to Moses as rules for the Israelites, sounds as though God is wanting to give them a warning that other gods are not a good idea. That is a warning that is just as important today!

Was The Lord talking about satanic rituals? Or was He talking about much simpler things, such as the every day things that we all know can get in the way of our relationship with Jesus?

Three months earlier, the whole Israelite nation had been rescued miraculously from slavery in Egypt. Consequently, they all recognised a God who was a miracle worker. His servant Moses was regularly invited to meet with God face to face (Exodus 33:11), and on one of those occasions, on Mount Sinai, he received the rules for life from The One who created life.

Many generations previously God had spoken to Abraham and promised that his descendants would live in their own land and be a holy people (Genesis 13:14-18). The people following Moses knew that promise and were looking forward to arriving in their own “promised land”.

Action

Pray today about any promises you may have had personally from God. Consider whether they are near accomplishment or whether they seem to be as far away as the day you received them. Maybe, as for the Israelites, they have happened, but don’t look like you expected them to.

Read Exodus 19 so that as we look at the commandments (Exodus 20), during this month, you can understand the setting better.

Ask yourself if you have other gods besides the Almighty. Think about work, family, possessions. There are many “things” that can interfere with our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
