Commandments – Day 24

Ephesians 6:2

Honour your father and mother – which is the first commandment with a promise.

The Thought

In his letter to the Ephesian church Paul encourages the readers and listeners to obey the commandments, quoting the fifth one. The promise which follows our verse for today is So that it will go well with you and that you may enjoy life on the earth (Ephesians 6:3).

The reason given for honouring our parents is that we will then have a long life! Who is there among us who does not want to have a long, happy and healthy life?

Sadly there are too many people in our world who do not have that. And many more who do not have a relationship with their earthly parents. For numerous reasons babies are adopted, or abandoned. Many are fostered from being tiny, and quite often have several different father figures and sometimes mother figures too. Also in our sad, disobedient world there are too many children who have no parenting at all. They spend their lives in children’s homes or hostels.

In Deuteronomy 5:16 we read so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you. I guess that message about the promised land was no longer appropriate in Paul’s day, but I am sure it had a huge effect on the wandering Israelites.

Action

Praise God today that He is a Father to all, and He keeps an eye on every baby born. He must weep still, over some situations. Pray for any families you know whose children are adopted or fostered. Pray that each member of those families will get to know Father God as a guide and good influence for their lives. Also pray that they will enjoy life on earth going eventually to Heaven to the “Father of all”!

Pray for your own family to be blessed in this generation and many following ones.
