Commandments – Day 23

Joshua 22:4-6

Now that The Lord your God has given them rest as He promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of The Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you.

The Thought

Joshua was the constant companion of Moses. He witnessed much of what no-one else saw of Moses’ relationship with God. He was well prepared to take over leadership of the wandering Israelites. And he took on that roll as they began to settle in the land that God had promised to Abraham many years earlier (Genesis 13:15).

In the organisation of settling the tribes, there were some battles to be won and much work to be done. So no-one was allowed to rest until everyone was settled. That part of the history can be read from Joshua 13 – Joshua 22. A long and detailed story.

In our verse for today Joshua is sending the tribes of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh back to their families who had been settled on the east side of the river. Today’s verses are included in his parting words to them which finish with a reminder of what God’s command was. Joshua 22:6 …to love The Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, to keep His commands, to hold fast to Him and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

How different life would be today right across the world if all believers since those days had sent out the next generation as young adults, with this same command!

Action

Pray today for the next generation in your family line. Pray that they would be ones who follow God’s commands.

Read more of Joshua 22. See how a simple misunderstanding almost led to another war!

Pray for God’s revelation on any misunderstandings you could have!
