Commandments – Day 15

Exodus 24:12

The Lord said to Moses, Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.

The Thought

What an amazing invitation this is! I am guessing that none of the readers of this study have had anything similar. Many of us have been on retreats and felt as though we were “on holiday” with God. But nothing can ever be as good as being invited to stay with the creator of the earth and hear directly what His plans are for the future.

In the following chapters we read of the offerings the people are to bring out of the precious things they were given by the Egyptians as they left their slavery. These were to decorate the sanctuary that was to be built.

When Moses met with The Almighty on the top of the mountain, God had already written the commandments on stone tablets which He gave to Moses to carry down the mountain. We read about that eight chapters later where we have this verse. Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. The tablets were the work of God. The writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. (Exodus 32:15-16).

Tragically those original tablets were broken as Moses became angry with the people for having built an idol in his absence (Exodus 32:19)!

Action

Imagine just for a moment that you were the recipient of this invitation to spend extended time alone with The Lord. What would your reaction be?

We all have that invitation daily. Remember that Jesus asked His disciples in Mark 6:31 Come with Me by yourselves and get some rest.

Try to do that today.
