Christmas – Day 14

Matthew 1:24-25

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him to do. He took Mary to be his wife. He did not have marital relations with her before she gave birth to a son. Joseph named the child Jesus.

The Thought

I am always impressed when I read of complete immediate obedience like Joseph’s. No questions, no hesitation. He was 100% convinced by the dream. At least that is how it comes across in the gospel of Matthew.

Can you imagine Joseph rushing off to tell Mary that it’s OK, he too has seen an angel and now he believes her? How must she have felt when he didn’t believe her at first? What agony she must have gone through. What prayers she must have prayed!

But Joseph must still have had questions… “Why me? How are we to parent Him? How are we to educate Him? Will He behave like a normal baby? How will we cope with the responsibility?” Just like any first time parents today, they would wonder who he would look like, his personality, and the big question “How do we educate the Son of The Lord Most High???”

I can imagine that Joseph knew the scriptures, and how he would be astonished when he realised that he – himself, a simple carpenter was to be the husband of the mother of the Son of God! Sometimes I feel that the Bible doesn’t give us enough detail, but if we ask Him, the Holy Spirit is always ready to give further revelation. It just takes time and persistence on our part.

Action

Think about your obedience to the Lord. Maybe you think He doesn’t give you dreams or messages, but He has left us a whole Bible to read which is full of encouragements, and things that followers of Jesus should be doing. Dare to ask Him today what He would like you to be doing for Him.
