Children of God – Day 15

Mark 15:39

And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard His cry and saw how He died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

The Thought

The gospels tell us that demons recognized who Jesus was. Before He did anything! When Jesus arrived in the Gadarenes, the gospels tell us that two demon possessed men who lived amongst the tombs approached Him declaring Jesus to be the Son of God (Matthew 8:28-29)!

The gospels also tell us that many people recognized Jesus because of what He did, the miracles He performed, and the way He lived. But today we have a verse saying that the centurion recognized Him because of the way He died! What do you think was the most influential point in Jesus’ death for this centurion? The loud cry Jesus gave with His last breath (Mark 15:37)?

Was it the three hours of darkness in the middle of the day (Mark 15:33)? Maybe it was the fact that Jesus Himself declared “It is finished” (John 19:30).

Many martyrs have brought people to the Lord at their moment of death. The way that we live and the way that we die can be very persuasive in helping others to see that we are children of God. And through that they can be persuaded that God is real.

Action

Ask yourself today if you are ready to not only live for Jesus, but to die for Him too.

Pray for the presence of Christ in your life to be obvious to many by the way you conduct your every day activities, and if necessary, by your attitude to death. Whether the death of others or yourself.

Praise God that for those children of God who know their Father, death is not an end but a beginning. A new start of a new life of total freedom bought for us by the resurrection of the Saviour of the world.
