How does a person know that Jesus lives in them? What does it mean for us to live in Him? And how do we recognise that Spirit that lives in us? To live in Him as this verse says is to be open to His Spirit, and to respond to His promptings.
I must admit these verses frustrate me slightly! I am not yet at the place where I receive whatever I ask! Many things Yes! I could write a book listing answers to prayer I have received. I am eternally grateful to God for answered prayers. But anything I ask? No! What about you?
The verses for today can be a challenge to many church members in the rich western world, but please note that John is not saying that we should be poor, but that we should be generous. We can give to others with the confidence that God will repay.
The example of Jesus in going to the cross and experiencing the lashings of the whips of the soldiers is the one we are to follow. In the way He did not retaliate, neither should we. In the way he gave His life out of love for others, so should we.
God told Cain that sin is crouching at his door, it desires to have him, but he must master it. God is still saying that to all of us today. It is our responsibility to resist the enemy at the door, whatever that enemy may try to persuade us to do.
John does not mince his words! For him, everything is black and white. Paul says ALL have sinned, so is there any hope? Jesus is the one to bring us hope, and understanding of the scriptures. We all have a tendency to selfishness, thinking we are right. We are disappointing Him.
All who believe in Jesus are known as children of God. The Greek word used here for know means recognise. In our modern times, many know that Jesus walked the earth, but they do not recognise Him as being The Only Son of God, Saviour of the World. How sad!
When we read these verses, we can get the impression that John wrote this letter expecting Jesus to return soon. That is understandable. Sadly many of those I know who have done righteous things still need to meet Jesus and have all the unrighteous things washed away by His blood.
Do things you have heard remain in you? I can think of times when I have heard something and then could not get it out of my mind. John tells us what the consequences are IF we remember the truth, and by suggestion, what will happen if we do not.
I would have said that the devil is the liar, or the antichrist is the liar. But here we are told that EVERYONE who does not acknowledge Jesus as Son of God is in that category! That is a scary thought. It makes me pray more for family and friends.
