1 John – Day 18

1 John 3:24

The one who keeps God’s commands lives in Him, and He in them. And this is how we know that He lives in us: We know it by the Spirit He gave us.

The Thought

This sounds very simple when we just read it through quickly, but are we sure? How does a person know that Jesus lives in them? What does it mean for us to live in Him? And how do we recognise that Spirit that lives in us?

If you are not sure, then take heart, ALL of us have doubts some of the time. Not of who Jesus is, but about ourselves, if we are doing enough of the right thing, if we are heading in the right direction.

Often demons will suggest to us that if we are believers we should be working harder for God, making converts, taking others to church etcetera. But basically all Jesus asks us to do is love Him and love others. Everything else comes out of that.

To live “in Him” as this verse says is to be open to His Spirit, and to respond to His promptings. Simple things are all He asks of us most of the time. He knows our gifts, and develops them for Himself. If your gift is not evangelism you don’t have to bring someone new to Jesus each week. Maybe all you are called to do is smile at the supermarket cashier or at a new neighbour, give something more than pennies to the beggar in the market, take flowers to someone who is not well.

Dare to tell the Lord today that you want to hear His voice a bit louder, and ask for His help in obeying it.

Go back in this study and read again Day 12 when we mentioned “children of God”. Ask yourself if you as His child, are becoming more like Him. Dare to pray that He gives you more of the family likeness!
