Babies and Children – Day 11

Luke 1:57

When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that The Lord had shown her great mercy and they shared her joy.

The Thought

After a few days looking at problems and the effects of sin on some of God’s children, let’s turn to the New Testament for some better news.

John, who was later known as the Baptist because he baptised many people, was a much longed for baby. I often wonder why God waited so long to bless Elizabeth and Zechariah in this way. But the timing had to be right for so many other things that were connected. The birth of Jesus, once Mary had reached an age of childbearing and had met Joseph, the adopted father chosen by The Father for His Son!

This was the beginning of a new season of miracles for God’s people. First the fact that Zechariah was made dumb while he was serving in the temple. Then the conception of John, followed by that of Jesus. As Mary arrived at Elizabeth’s home, John leapt in his mother’s womb and Elizabeth sang a prophetic song knowing suddenly that Mary was carrying the Messiah!

The time those two new expectant mothers spent together must have been full of excitement, with much prayer, and many questions. Why had they been chosen? How were they to teach these God ordained babies?

Action

Pray today for anyone you know who is expecting a baby. Are they happy or unhappy with this growing tiny person? Pray for a healthy child for them, one who will know the Lord and fulfill His plans for their life. (Jeremiah 29:11) I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. Plans to give you a future and a hope.

Read the first chapter of Luke and allow yourself to be excited by all that you read there.
