7 Seals – Day 5

Revelation 5:6a

I saw a lamb standing in the center near the throne with the four living creatures and the leaders. The lamb looked like he had been slaughtered.

The Thought

I saw a lamb standing in the center near the throne. In the last verse we heard that the Lion of Judah had the right to break the seals, but now the story continues with a Lamb! Jesus is both Lion (the conqueror) and the Lamb (chosen to be sacrificed).

In the last verse we heard that the Lion of Judah had the right to break the seals. But now the story continues with a Lamb! Is it difficult for you to really understand that Jesus is both Lion (the leader / conqueror) and the Lamb (chosen to be sacrificed)?

Describing Jesus as the Lamb of God is not unusual. The first person in the New Testament to do that was His cousin, John the Baptist. John recognised that now that Jesus had come out into the open, his own ministry was nearly over (John 1:29 & 36).

Throughout the Old Testament the sacrificial lamb was of utmost importance. Both for the forgiveness of sins and for the completion of God’s redemption plan.

It was not an accident that Jesus was crucified at Passover, and is often referred to as The Passover Lamb. This festival is in remembrance of the Israelites being freed from slavery in Egypt after they had sacrificed the first “passover lambs” which all had to be without blemish.

Each year since that first Passover, Jewish people all over the world celebrate this festival and remember that passover lamb.

The Lamb that John saw in his visions while on Patmos “looked like he had been slaughtered”. John could see the scars, just as Jesus carried the blood stained marks on His hands, feet and side after He had risen from the dead (Luke 24:39, John 20:20-28).

Action

Take time to read Exodus 12. Be amazed once more at the plans God had thousands of years ago (and still has) to save His people.

Thank God for His Word, the Bible that tells the complete story from the beginning of creation to the end of time.

Praise God for Jesus who carried out God’s redemption plan and gave His life for you and me.
