7 Seals – Day 3

Revelation 5:1-3

I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who sits on the throne. It had writing both on the inside and on the outside. It was sealed with seven seals. I saw a powerful angel calling out in a loud voice, “Who deserves to open the scroll and break the seals on it?” No one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth could open the scroll or look inside it.

The Thought

We could spend a lot of time looking at the rest of chapter 4, but the purpose of this study is to look at the seven seals, so we skip to chapter 5.

After a description of the Heavenly throne which would inspire and challenge any budding film maker, John noticed that the King on the throne is holding something important. The scroll (some translations say “book”) cannot be opened, and we are not told how or why, but somehow John knows that fact.

Even from John’s viewpoint this scroll is unusual, normal scrolls only have writing on the inside, but John can see enough to know that this one is written on both sides.

For me that suggests completion. Nothing can be added to what was written before time began.

As you read this verse, can you imagine the voices and sense the emotions they express?

The “mighty” angel cannot open the scroll. So it is not a question of strength, it is a question of honour or having gained the right to open it. It seems that nobody had that right. Nobody was worthy enough!

Action

Thank your Heavenly Father today that He is still sitting on the throne in Heaven and that nothing happening on the earth is a surprise to Him. Praise Him that He loves each person on the earth whether they know Him or not, and whether they are worthy of His love or not. Very few of us are!

Pray for those you know who don’t know Him yet. Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to them as well as to yourself.

Pray for boldness and sensitivity for yourself as you prepare to talk to those people about faith in Jesus.
