Suddenly – Day 22

Isaiah 47:11

Disaster will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you.

The Thought

These are serious words Isaiah is speaking to the people of Babylon. And they seem to go with the verses we were thinking about yesterday (Jesus’s second coming, the end of the world etc.).

How tragic it is that satan has never given up on trying to kill off believers. But it is also tragic to hear about the sudden tragedies all over the world: floods, fires, earthquakes, invasions. It seems that far too regularly these tragic events are being reported on our news media.

Today’s verse is in the middle of a prophecy which is really telling the city of Babylon that she is not the queen she thinks herself to be.

It was God Himself that had allowed Babylon to lord it over Israel, because He needed to teach them a lesson. But it looks now as though He thinks that Babylon has overstepped the mark!

They have gone too far! Even on the aged you have laid a heavy yoke (v6)!

Much of this chapter makes me think of the world today. Too much is too much! Many local and national governments world-wide, do not consider the people in their care. They do not take seriously the responsibility they have to produce happy well nurtured people who form good communities. Too many pockets are being filled privately. Too many “private meetings” are happening.

Action

Pray today for your own government, both at local and national level. Pray that they would recognise Jesus as Lord.

Read Isaiah 47. Dare to ask the Lord if He has a plan for you to get involved in politics, local or national.
