The Last – Day 26

James 5:3

Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.

The Thought

Here we are nearing the end of 2024, and many think we are living through the last days. There are certainly many who believe that Jesus’ return is near, but the first disciples thought that too!

How many of the richer people in our world would be worried if they knew the verse today? We live in strange times, and it seems that so many of the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer, often at the expense of the poor!

But this last chapter of the letter from James makes us think that few things have changed since Biblical times, except that maybe the corruption is worse. What do you think?

The chapter is entitled Warning to rich oppressors in my Bible, and it begins with a stern warning to the rich to weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you (James 5:1).

Please note that God is not against the rich, unless they do not use their money to bless others and to extend His kingdom. Remember that Jesus told His followers to give in order to receive! Give and it will be given to you … with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Luke 6:38).

Our giving can make the Kingdom of God grow on the earth.

Action

Think today about how and where you give. Not just financially, but your time and your efforts too. There is a world outside our homes and churches that needs our blessings, and our prayers.

Read James 5 today and pray for those you know of who could feel guilty if they read the first six verses.
