Followers of Jesus – Day 24

1 Peter 2:24

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. “By his wounds you have been healed.”

The Thought

Peter always comes across, (at least to me) as a man of few words. His letters are short and easy to read. The only time we see or hear of Peter saying much was on the Day of Pentecost when he preached a good sermon to the watching bewildered crowd in Jerusalem (Acts 2).

He also said the wrong thing several times!

When Jesus asked His disciples who people thought He was, then more specifically aimed the question at the disciples, Peter didn’t hesitate to say “You are the Messiah, The Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

Just a few verses later, Peter responds from his heart on hearing Jesus tell how He would die and then return to life. I don’t think Peter heard the second part of what Jesus was saying there, he responded in haste with “Never Lord, This shall not happen to you!” (Matthew 16:22).

Peter knew at that moment that he and the other disciples would defend Jesus no matter what. That didn’t happen! Peter denied Christ on the evening of His betrayal (Matthew 26:69-74).

Much later when Peter had been forgiven and learned to forgive himself, then had been filled with Holy Spirit, and begun his life as a missionary, he wrote two short letters making it very clear who Jesus was and what He achieved and left as a heritage for us.

Action

Read one or both of Peter’s letters today and ask God to highlight for you what you need to remember.

Pray for you faith to remain strong under stress and that you will not deny Jesus no matter what stress the future holds.
