Idols – Day 5

Isaiah 2:6 & 8

You, Lord, have abandoned your people… They are full of superstitions from the East… they embrace pagan customs.

Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.

The Thought

These verses sound as though the prophet is accusing God of neglect! This chapter of Isaiah begins with real joy and encouragement, but when the prophet reflected on the depth of sin of God’s people he was not happy, and even suggested that God should never forgive them (Isaiah 2:9).

Following this suggestion, Isaiah then recommended that the people go and hide because the presence of an angry God is a terrifying prospect. He went on to visualise the day of the Lord’s coming telling us that all the proud and lofty will be humbled (verse 12).

The chapter ends with an interesting suggestion, that could be relative for many today. Stop trusting in mere humans who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?

Many people in leadership today do not worship idols in the Biblical sense, but they do make idols of themselves, or their job, or their finances. They are convinced that they are the best person for the responsibility they hold, while thinking only of their own bank accounts or the contacts that come with their position rather than taking the responsibility seriously.

How tragic! We, the ordinary people suffer from their decisions! But we, the Christians, are responsible for praying for them!

Action

Read Isaiah 2 today. The chapter ends with a plea for people to stop trusting in humans!

Pray for the leaders in your country. Are they proud and lofty, taking advantage of their position, or are they ordinary humble people doing all they can for those they represent? Whichever side they are on, they need us to pray for them.
