The Weather – Day 21

Acts 27:4 & 7

From there we put out to sea again and passed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us.

We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

The Thought

Stormy weather proved to be a problem for the ship which was carrying Paul on his way to Caesar’s court in Rome. But whatever happened, Paul didn’t miss an opportunity to talk about Jesus.

He also used his prophetic gifting, when the winter months brought bad weather and the chance of dangerous sailing (Acts 27:10). Sadly the officials on board ignored Paul’s advice and kept going. Later on, they probably regretted not having listened to the prophet in their midst.

Nowhere in the Bible do we read that the Christian life will be easy. We all pass through storms, and unexpected “bad weather”, and we need good spiritual advisors to help us pilot our way through those things without too much loss of property. We also need to listen to trustworthy prophetic voices.

If the ship’s crew had listened to Paul (who had a direct line to God) much of the property could have been saved.

Action

Read Acts 27 and note the advice that Paul gave to the sailors, and whether they heeded him or not.

Note also the different winds that were experienced, sometimes with rapid change. For example, in verse 13 there is a gentle south wind, which changed to a hurricane in verse 14!

Have you ever had days that started with a gentle breeze and ended with a hurricane? Praise God that He was in them both.

As you go through your day today look for opportunities to share your faith, and bring confidence to those around you.
