Separation – Day 1

Genesis 1:2-4

The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said “Let there be light,”… God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.

The Thought

These verses have to be some of the deepest in the Bible. We could spend a whole month on Creation, (we did in November 2021!). But for now, let’s just accept that God looked out from Heaven over the whole of creation, which is so much vaster than the galaxies known to scientists today. God was looking from Heaven to earth, but had not yet created anything on the earth. It was just a lump in the cosmos! He did not like the darkness which was covering the earth, and so He decided to do something interesting and created light on the earth.

Please note that we are not talking here of sun and moon, they were created on Day 4!! We who rely on the sun to give us our daily light, cannot imagine another light not dependant on the rising and setting sun.

The symbolism of light and darkness are carried all the way through the Bible. And it is never once suggested that they cohabit. There is always a suggestion of separation. This very first act that God performed on the earth is symbolic of the way we should live, and also of what Christ would do much further down the line of time, when He came as the Light, and overcame the spirit of death and darkness at His resurrection.

Action

Praise God for the consistency of His plan in sending The Light to overcome the darkness.

Pray for your life to be one of light, and pray for Holy Spirit to separate you from any spiritual darkness that may be surrounding you.
