Psalm 23 – Day 19

Psalm 23:5

You prepare a table before me…

The Thought

We return to our psalm today for an interesting encouragement. There is much in the Bible about food, and miraculous provision. Here are just a few examples:

God’s provision of manna and quail in the desert after the Israelites complained about their hunger. Exodus 16

Elisha prayed for a widow with her last drop of oil. 2 Kings 4:1-7

Jesus multiplied the bread and fish to make one boy’s lunch feed 5000 men and their families. Matthew 14:21

Jesus chose to eat with all sorts of different people: Zaccheus the tax collector Luke 19:1-10, sinners Matthew 9:10-13, He picnicked with His disciples, and provided breakfast on the beach for them John 21:12.

In the Letter to the church of Laodicea we read that Jesus is knocking at our doors, longing to come in and eat with us. Revelation 3:20

In Song of songs, the beloved, representing the Bride of Christ, (that is all who are believers) speaks of the bridegroom taking her to sit at His banqueting table. Song of Songs 2:4

As we read through the Bible we are convinced that God has a banquet waiting for the followers of Jesus at the end of time as we know it. When we attend the wedding supper of the lamb (Revelation 19:9), then we will really understand what David was looking forward to when he wrote in this psalm that The Lord prepared a table for him. But was it the heavenly banquet he was referring to? No, because there will be no enemies there!

Action

As you eat today, remember all that God has provided for you, spiritual food as well as regular food to eat. Deuteronomy 8:3

As you go shopping for food, praise Him that there is such a variety of choice.

Remember too the Bread and the Wine that Jesus blessed and told His disciples were His body and blood. Matthew 26:26-27
