Mountains – Day 1

Genesis 7:19-20

They (the waters) rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits. (23 feet / 6.8 metres)

The Thought

There are many different mountains named in the Bible, but this is the first time they are specifically mentioned. The earth in the creation story, in Genesis 1, is not described as mountains and valleys, just land. But God obviously loves variety and we can imagine that the land He created was very varied.

The story of Noah, can have much to teach us, He was an obedient subject of the Lord God, and the only righteous person the Lord could find on the earth. He must have been questioned, mocked and ridiculed by onlookers when he was doing what only God could have described. There was no boat building book to help him with the construction!

In the first verse of today’s chapter we read of God saying to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family because I have found you righteous in this generation.”

What a complement from the Lord! We find another compliment in verse 5: And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.

Action

Reflect today on your obedience to God’s instructions. Be generous about your actions, not depressed by your failures, (We all have those, and Jesus died for our forgiveness.)

Read Genesis 5 and get a sense of God’s frustration and sadness that so soon after Eden the people had become so evil.
