Esther – Day 10

Like any good heroine it seems Esther did everything right! And everyone liked her. Do you suppose that was because she was a nice person? I prefer to think that it is because the favour of God rested on her. People of prayer are often recognisable as people of peace.

Esther 2:15

When the turn came for Esther to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favour of everyone who saw her. She was taken to King Xerxes in the royal residence in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

The Thought

Like any good heroine it seems as though Esther did everything right! And everyone liked her. Do you suppose that was because she was a nice person? Sensible, intelligent, good humoured?

I prefer to think that it is because the favour of God rested on her. She would have been taught to pray by Mordecai, and even though in the Jewish culture of her day, women didn’t participate in public prayers, and men were very much the head of the household, women knew how to pray. Remember Hannah, Samuel’s mother, who prayed so hard that the priest thought she was drunk (1 Samuel 1:13)!!

People of prayer are often recognisable as people of peace. Others enjoy their company, and that is obviously what happened to Esther, everyone enjoyed her company.

She had been carefully prepared by Mordecai for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). That is the famous expression taken from later in this story, but if she had not survived this first night with the king there would not have been the second part of her story!

Action

Praise God today for those people who have taught you how to pray and study the Bible.

Take time to remember times in your past when you have turned to God for help and He has answered.

Thank Him that today He is preparing you for your future, whatever it might hold. Only He knows His plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11).
