Wisdom (Proverbs 8) – Day 9

Proverbs 8:12

I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.

The Thought

Prudence is not a word we hear much in our day used in the context of a description for life. But in the past it was a popular name for girls, maybe given by parents who wanted their daughter to grow up with plenty of common sense, making wise decisions.

One dictionary definition of prudence is:- good judgement, moral courage and astute common sense. These words combine well with the knowledge and discretion mentioned in todays’s verse, giving us an idea of the perfect person!

Having wisdom in our life style gives us all these things. Which parent does not want their child to possess them? Who among us doesn’t want them for themselves?

Right at the beginning of the book of Proverbs, Solomon gave us his reason for writing this long list of good advice! For gaining wisdom and instruction, for understanding words of insight: for receiving instruction in prudent behaviour, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young… (Proverbs 1:2-4).

Why do we not hear more sermons from Proverbs in our churches? There is much to be learned from wise thinkers from the past. In the very first verse of Proverbs there is the identity of the writer as son of David. Much of Solomon’s identity came from what David had learned in his long journey from rejected child to king.

Action

Think today about the wisdom you gained as a child, and thank God for those who cared for you and taught you. Especially thank Jesus for those who told you about Him, whether you were very young, or converted as an adult.

Read Proverbs 1 today and pray that you will influence the next generation for good.
