Wisdom (Proverbs 8) – Day 8

Proverbs 8:10-11

Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

The Thought

The writer of proverbs sees himself as a wise teacher having learned the lessons of life, and several times he identifies himself with his subject matter. Here he is speaking of wisdom with a female identity!

So much of our society today is concerned with finance. “Nothing is for nothing,” we hear people say. “Everything must be paid for somehow.” And that is true. Very little in our world today is free. Most of us have to focus on finance and know how to deal with money sometime before we become adults. All of us want to leave our children something, and our prayers are that they don’t have any financial worries.

These verses inspired by God through King Solomon, who was known for his wisdom, tell us the contrary! From his exalted position as king of Israel, he recognised that all the money he had, and the power he exercised, was nothing compared with the wisdom he had received from The Lord.

Helping our children make wise decisions about their present situations as well as their future is extremely important, no matter how old they are. And most of us hope to leave a positive inheritance, both in the area of finance and that of wisdom. A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous (Proverbs 13:22).

Action

Think today about your attitude to finance. Do your consider yourself wise in how you deal with it? Have you an inheritance to leave for your children and grandchildren? Have you used wisely any inheritance you have received? If not, then pray for forgiveness and wisdom in the future.

Read Proverbs 13 and take note of any of the verses there which speak to your present situation.
