Wisdom (Proverbs 8) – Day 5
Proverbs 8:6
Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.
The Thought
Taken out of context, this sentence could be an election campaign speech! All candidates want us to listen. All candidates want us to think they are honest and trustworthy! That they are speaking only what is right! That they are the only ones to have the truth!
How many of us believe everything a politician says? I suspect very few!
How many people do we know who have the same sort of attitude to God’s word? They listen to it in church, or even read it at home, but they don’t truly believe it!
But the psalmist tells us God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm119:105).
People will say that might be true for believers, but not for those who don’t know God. But often people who don’t have a faith can be converted, just by opening a Bible and reading something from the first page they see, finding that it speaks directly to their situation. God’s word is powerful and we must never underestimate it.
Action
Try it today. Ask God to give you a word of encouragement or one that applies to a specific problem that you have. If you don’t have any problems or worries right now, then spend time praising Jesus and ask Him to give you words for others.
Thank Him in advance that He knows what is needed, then open your Bible at random and read it slowly, allowing the words to sink into your heart.
Or, if you prefer, read Psalm 119 which has much to say about the power of God’s word, and the precepts which He wants us to obey.
