Wisdom (Proverbs 8) – Day 3

Proverbs 8:3

Beside the gate leading into the city, at the entrance, she (wisdom) cries aloud.

The Thought

We will wait until tomorrow to look at what exactly wisdom is calling. Today let’s note where she is standing to make her proclamations.

In Biblical times and for many centuries following, there were very few entries into any large town. All visitors would come in through the same gate, and that’s where the city elders met (Genesis 19:1, Job 29:7-8). If there was anything important to be announced, it would be shouted aloud in the entrance to the city.

In today’s verse Wisdom in personified as a woman shouting about the correct thing to do to all who are entering or leaving the town. The suggestion is that everyone has a chance to know what is right and wrong, because they have the opportunity to go and listen to the conversation of the elders at the city gates. Wisdom is speaking to the leaders of the city!

Whether what we read today in the media is the truth, is debatable. All that we hear is filtered through the media and the financial powers controlling it. These are not always reliable sources, and we need wisdom and guidance from God to know exactly what we should listen to.

Jesus said to His listeners: I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). That still stands today, and talking and listening to Him is the best thing we can do. He is ready to help us understand both present and future events.

Action

Read John 14 today and ask Jesus to help you decipher the news so that you know and understand what is going on in our world amongst the conflicting voices today.

Pray for His wisdom in whatever situations you are involved in, whether at home, at work, or at church.
