Wisdom (Proverbs 8) – Day 27

Proverbs 1:5-6

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance – for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.

The Thought

Most of us have, at least once in our lives, read a good book and recommended it to at least one other member of our families or a friend or other believers, and it seems as though the author of Proverbs is the same! He is recommending that the readers tell others that these things are worth remembering. He is very pleased with what he is going to write, and wants others to be excited about it too.

The writer knows nobody ever has complete wisdom, there is always something else to learn. With Christianity too, there is always more to learn, a new challenge to respond to. God always has something new to teach us, a new truth about Himself, or a new revelation about our world.

The words wisdom and wise are each used more than 50 times in the 31 chapters of the book of Proverbs. It is obviously an important subject for the author and for The Lord who wants wise followers, not robots going through a programme.

The last chapter of Proverbs gives us a description of the perfect wife, often referred to as “the Proverbs 31 lady”. A part of her description is she speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26).

Action

Read Proverbs 1 today and let it challenge you to read more of this interesting book and to memorise some of the verses which speak to your present situation.

Read also Proverbs 31 and think about some of the women you know, do any of them have all the qualities of this perfect wife!
