Wisdom (Proverbs 8) – Day 26
Proverbs 1:1-2
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction.
The Thought
We have come to the end of Proverbs 8 which is totally dedicated to Wisdom, but there are many more verses speaking of this subject throughout this very helpful book. We see here that right from the start the aim of the book was to help us be wise.
I don’t think I have heard a single sermon on Proverbs in the seventy years and more that I have been a church goer! I can’t understand why pastors don’t use it more.
The reason for the book of Proverbs being written is clearly stated in this first verse. Who is there among us who does not need wisdom and instruction at some time (if not all the time), in our lives?
Solomon was blessed to have wise king David as his father, although David was far from being perfect, as we think about that quality by our modern standards.
David had several wives, and actually fathered nineteen children! Their names are given along with the names of their mothers in 1 Chronicles 3. We must wonder how Solomon was the only one remembered for his wisdom! Solomon was not the first born, but whatever the reason he was the one chosen by God to follow his father on the royal throne.
Action
Read 1 Chronicles 28-29 where we see David’s plans for the building of the temple in Jerusalem, we also read about his wives and his children, followed by his farewell speech and his declaration that Solomon was to be the next king.
How difficult it must have been for Solomon to follow such a beloved father and king.
It is often difficult today to take the job or position of somebody who was extremely popular.
Pray for world leaders again today, that any who are not chosen by God will be ousted, and His choice will be put in place.
