Who is God – Day 5

Jeremiah 30:17

But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds declares The Lord.

The Thought

In my Bible this chapter is titled “Restoration of Israel”. It is an encouraging chapter where we read that God told the Israelites that He could see the mess they were in. And He had plans to change their situation. We can take this same promise for ourselves today. And for our families, our areas, and for our nations.

Many places around the world are suffering at the moment as prices rise, as we continue to recover from the covid crisis, and are swamped by talks of rising inflation. We hear constantly of wars or possible wars. The world is not a nice place if we look at the bad things. But this promise from God through Jeremiah is good for us all to read, even daily.

The verse is near the end of a long chapter which starts with a promise of restoration and continues with a description of the problems of God’s people letting them know that He sees everything. The Hebrew name for The Lord used in this verse is Jehovah Rapha meaning The Lord who heals.

There are many examples of this aspect of God’s character throughout the Bible, not least when Jesus walked the earth, but also His disciples after Him. We tend to think it is used only when a person receives healing from a sickness or disability as happened throughout the gospels. But God the healer can heal any and every situation. Even when a nation, or an individual doesn’t recognise that it is sick! We will look at the healing of the water at Marah on day 10.

Action

Read Jeremiah 30 today, and note the promises of the Lord. Pray them for your local area, your wider political district and your country. Then look for answers to those prayers in the news, and every time you hear something good, rejoice that The Lord is able to continue what He has started.
