Who is God – Day 21

John 1:1

In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God, and The Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

The Thought

This very well known verse opens John’s gospel and tells us that John had understood exactly who Jesus was. Often known as the beloved disciple, a name John gave himself (John 13:23,26, 20:2, 21:7,20), he seems to have understood who Jesus is better than the other disciples. Maybe it was just that he was able to verbalise it better, but his gospel is full and overflowing with the love of God for himself, and for the world.

But to say that Jesus is The Word, what does that mean exactly? The short answer is “I don’t know”, but I think there has to be a link to the very beginning of Genesis where we read of God speaking things into being. The expression let there be … appears 7 times in the first chapter (Genesis 1:3,6,14,20,24,26).

John never changed his idea about who God was, and when he wrote the last book in our Bibles, sharing with us the amazing visions he had of the end times, he referred once more to Jesus as The Word (Revelation 19:13), but also as King of kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16).

Mankind was made in the image of God, so our words are powerful just as God’s were in the first week of creation. Pay attention today to your own words. Too often, because of the stress of the moment, many of us say things we don’t really mean.

Action

Read Proverbs 18:21 and take it to heart today. Use your words to bless and not curse.

Remember James 3:10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

Praise God for the consistency in His Word.
