The Soul and the Spirit – Day 6

Proverbs 20:27

The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, that sheds light on one’s inmost being.

The Thought

It is not every day that we contemplate the fact that the way we live and react in different situations is noticeable by others. But if we are consistent in our behaviour, then people notice. And sometimes comment!

Many of us have met people we would describe as radiating the presence of God, and that is what this verse is referring to. When we live according to His plans, then our spirits are connected to Holy Spirit and He radiates the love of the Triune God through us.

The lamp of the Lord in this verse shines inside us and shows others what is really there. If we are angry with others, unjust in our dealings with them, or rebellious, then that light of Holy Spirit doesn’t shine through. Sin causes the lamp to be dimmed, and can make it be extinguished!

A lamp needs to burn brightly in order to search things out. Just as a candle needs a strong wick, and an oil lamp needs a good supply of oil, so we need a good supply of the Lord’s Spirit to keep our spirit burning bright. If we allow Holy Spirit to run our lives, then we will discover the things in our inner most being that are not in line with God’s thoughts and which need to be put right.

Action

Read Proverbs 20 today for more good advice about life generally. Choose one or two verses to learn by heart.

Pray for your spirit to shine brightly for Him.

Praise God for His Spirit which helps us in our weaknesses (Romans 8:26). Praise Him that He is releasing more and more of His Holy Spirit on the earth in these last days.
