The Soul and the Spirit – Day 4

Genesis 2:16-17

The LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

The Thought

Adam and Eve didn’t die as we understand death, but obviously something serious happened. Until that moment when they ate the forbidden fruit they walked and talked freely with God and they didn’t pay any attention to the fact that they were naked! In fact, never having been clothed, they knew nothing else!

I believe that at that moment when they disobeyed God, their spirits died. There was a part of God that was in them that they had not realised was there until the moment it disappeared! From that moment on, their souls took over the running of their lives.

It was their souls that experienced for the first time, the new feeling of guilt and made them hide from God (Genesis 3:8). Our souls still do the same today. It is the soul which reacts in fear and says we are not good enough for God, telling us that He is angry with us when we have disobeyed.

Many people who used to attend church, now don’t because they think they are not good enough for God. That is the enemy’s lying to their souls! Just as God had the answer and covered Adam and Eve after their sin, so He provided the answer for us in the blood of Jesus which covers our sin. Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered over (Romans 4:7).

Action

Praise God that He is not angry with you, but is slow to anger and abounding in love and forgiveness (Numbers 14:18).

Read Genesis 3 today and pray for a fresh understanding of what happened when Adam sinned in the garden.
