The Soul and the Spirit – Day 3

1 Thessalonians 5:23

May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Thought

Paul, the author of this epistle to the church in Thessalonica, is very clear that our bodies have three parts, we are all made up of body, soul, and spirit. Much of His teachings are intended to help us keep them all working well and working together.

The apostle is concerned that the believers in this church in Thessalonica are as holy as possible, and he begins by mentioning the spirit. The fact that he puts “spirit” first in his list means it is the most important. If our spirit is healthy, it will keep our soul and our body healthy too.

To keep our spirit healthy, we need to spend time with the Lord, to pray and to read His word. Each of us knows in our heart, that when we are disciplined to do that, things go better. If you spend quality time with Jesus, your spirit will be fed, your soul calm and your body less stressed and physically healthier than it would without prayer.

Action

Pray today for the discipline to spend more time with the Lord and allow Him to feed your spirit. Most of us are busy most of the time, but prayer is an essential part of staying healthy to do all we have to do.

Praise God that He inspired Paul to write these words, because it is His desire to have your spirit, soul and body blameless long before the last day.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5 today and note the other good advice Paul gives this young church. There is a long list of instructions there that are applicable for most of us today. We are never too old to learn or re-learn, and the Word of God can challenge us at any age. Pray that you will never stop growing in Him.
