The Soul and the Spirit – Day 25

Luke 1:46-47

And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.

The Thought

After the visit of the angel, telling her the surprising and “impossible” news that she was pregnant, Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. The angel gave Mary a double surprise telling her of 2 miracles: confirming her own pregnancy, but also that of Elizabeth in her old age!

At the meeting with her cousin the two women both had spiritual reactions. Elizabeth immediately knew in her spirit that Mary was carrying the long awaited Messiah, and Mary burst into song! What an amazing moment that must have been! We can imagine these cousins both laughing and crying together!

Each one of them understood the difference between her soul and her spirit, and both women had physical reactions that resulted in praise. That is what the Lord wants from each one of us, as we begin to understand what He is doing in our own lives and those around us.

Paul urged his readers to pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and when we keep one eye on what the Lord is doing, and one ear open to His voice as we go through the day, we can do that. Sometimes that happens naturally as it did at the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth, sometimes we have to speak to the soul as David did (Day 9).

Action

Read Luke 1 and imagine the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth.

Speak to your spirit and to your soul today and tell them to come in line with God’s word and to rejoice together in Him no matter what your circumstances are.

Pray for the boldness to let your spirit rule over your soul. Pray for a deeper understanding of the difference between the two.
