The Soul and the Spirit – Day 24
Matthew 27:50
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He gave up His spirit.
The Thought
Jesus is the only example that will ever exist of a perfect man whose spirit and soul were in perfect unity.
At the moment of the death of Jesus, His body carried the punishment for our sins and both His soul and His spirit, as well as His body, were in agony because of the separation from the loving Father, with whom He had been in total communion until this point.
We can never fully understand the agony that Jesus suffered, and I think that after we give our hearts and spirits to Him and become believers, it then takes us most of our Christian lives to accept the love of the Father God who asked His Son to submit to having a humble birth, live as a traveling teacher, and go to His death for every person on the planet, past present and future.
On the cross, Jesus made His own decision to give up His spirit, just as He had previously made His own decision to follow the Father’s will right through to the end. He agonized over that decision in the garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), to the point of perspiring what looked like blood (Luke 22:44).
Most believers are convinced that it was blood.
Action
Read again today the account leading up to the crucifixion (Matthew 26), and pray for a fresh understanding of what Jesus did for you on the cross. Thank Him for His determination to go all the way in obedience to the God who is His Father and yours.
Praise Jesus that He did what He did for you, for your family, your neighbours, for all who live in your town, city, and country.
Share that good news with someone today.
