The Soul and the Spirit – Day 10

Matthew 26:38

My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.

The Thought

Jesus spoke these words to Peter, James and John in the garden of Gethsemane preparing to go on to what He knew would be the most painful death anyone has ever experienced. Jesus was experiencing the biggest spiritual battle that has ever taken place. The only way He could get through it was by staying constantly in touch with His Father, so, He took His closest followers and asked them to pray with Him. How sad He must have been to find them sleeping, while He had been literally sweating blood!

What an incredible few days that must have been, and in this chapter, Matthew gives us a detailed overview of all that happened, from the anointing of Jesus at Bethany, followed by Judas betraying the Saviour of the world for a sum of money. Then, the Last Supper together with His followers when Jesus told them about His imminent betrayal.

After taking the bread and the wine together, they went to the Mount of Olives, and Jesus warned them again that he was about to be betrayed!

There are times in all our lives when we face battles between our soul and our spirit. We need others to help us get through. None of them are as bad as the battle Jesus went through, and when we suffer, it is good to remember that.

Action

Read the full chapter of Matthew 26 today, and realise all that Jesus went through so that we could have access to Heaven!

Praise God for those people in your past who have helped you get through spiritual battles.

Pray for others you know who are facing trials at the moment, and need encouragement to stay on the side of the Holy Spirit and not give in to their own soul ideas or to the devil.
