The Last – Day 7

2 Samuel 23:1

These are the last words of David: The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse, the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, the hero of Israel’s songs.

The Thought

What a great epitaph this is, and the last words of David can be read in the following 7 verses. The strange thing is that they were not exactly the last words!

Not for another two chapters do we read that David rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David (1 Kings 2:10).

Of course, the Old Testament was not all written in chronological order, and different books were written at different times by a variety of authors. That explains the variation in texts.Of course, the Old Testament was not all written in chronological order, and different books were written at different times by a variety of authors. That explains the variation in texts.

2 Samuel 24 tells us of disputes between David’s sons, born of different mothers concerning who should follow David on the throne. How sad that a man who had achieved so much for Israel left such an inheritance! But in fact David himself had never known anything different. When he was a young shepherd boy he was despised by his brothers, and not recognised by his father, being the “forgotten son” when Samuel was sent to anoint him as king, many years before that became reality (1 Samuel 16).

Since the days of David, many thrones have been fought over by those who think they should inherit the position of king. There seems to be something in human nature that makes many of us want to make our own decisions and be in charge of the world around us.

The first rebellion against God was in Eden!

Action

Read the last words of David (2 Samuel 23:1-7) today.

Pray for the leaders of your country, that whatever their political leanings, they will allow God to guide them, and be truly His instrument bringing long term good to the people they represent.
