The Last – Day 25
Revelation 2:8
To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of Him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.
The Thought
During these amazing visions, Jesus dictated letters to John, with different messages for each of seven churches. Interestingly Jesus gives Himself a different name as He writes to each church. Each letter to each individual church is worth reading slowly and meditating on to see how it applies to us.
The first letter is for the Ephesian church and Jesus describes Himself as the One who holds the seven stars, and walks among the seven golden lampstands (Revelation 2:1).
The second church is Smyrna in today’s verse.
The third church is Pergamum where Jesus carries the sharp double-edged sword (Revelation 2:12), a sign that spiritual battles will be fought there.
To the fourth church, Thyatira, Jesus describes Himself as the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze (Revelation 2:18).
To the Sardis church, Jesus describes Himself as the One who holds the seven sprits of God and the seven stars (Revelation 3:1).
The next description for the Philadelphian church is Him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David (Revelation 3:7).
The letter to Laodicea describes Jesus as the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation (Revelation 3:14).
Action
Read these descriptions of Jesus slowly and think about each characteristic of the Saviour. Which description is most like how you see Jesus?
Take time to look at the seven different churches today and ask yourself which best describes your church or your home group. Give some thought to what each description means in “real life”, and pray for the churches in your area to fulfill their divine purpose and to become what God has called them to be, working together for His glory.
