The Last – Day 2
Exodus 14:24
During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion.
The Thought
The pillars of fire and cloud must have been amazing to experience, and a real confirmation for the Israelites that God was leading them. They did not know how far they would go, or even their destination, but were pleased that their ever present God seemed more present that usual.
Today’s verse is early after they left Egypt, and the Israelites had not yet realised how far they were going to have to walk to their new homes. In fact very few of those escapees from Egypt saw the new land, they almost all died in the desert, and it was their children and grandchildren, many born during the desert wanderings, that actually settled in what we now call “The Holy Land” after their long journey. Those desert-born fighting men took down the walls of Jericho and took over the first town in their new country (Joshua 6).
It is a very different story that my family experienced when we moved to live in France more than 40 years ago, but we can all look back now and say “It is one of the hardest thing we have ever done, but we are all very happy that we did it.” None of us have regrets.
Action
Think today about some of the more difficult things you have experienced, and how they have changed your own life and others in your family. Praise God for His guidance, and for the “promised land” where you are now living.
Read Exodus 14 and imagine being a part of one of those armies, the escaping jewish people, or the persuing Egyptians. Spend some time praising God for what He accomplished for the Jewish nation then, and pray for them to know His protection today.
