Suddenly – Day 30

Acts 8:39

When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.

The Thought

A well known “suddenly” to finish this study. The disciples had seen the risen Lord, and obeyed His instructions to wait for the Holy Spirit who had visited them all powerfully. Now they were doing as The Lord had told them. Go into all the world and preach the gospel (Mark 16:15). There was no meeting of the disciples to organise themselves and divide the area into small parts so that each one went to a certain place, Holy Spirit led them to where He wanted them to go. Many of them found themselves in amazing situations, knowing that they were in the right place at an important moment. That was Philip’s case in this story.

In obedience to angelic instructions Philip found himself on a desert road. He was following a chariot carrying a devout Ethiopian who “just happened” to be reading Isaiah’s prophecy about the death of Jesus.

Nothing happens by chance when we are obeying The Lord! Philip explained the gospel to this man, and consequently he was baptised into God’s kingdom. It is worth noting here that this Ethiopian did not follow a course of several weeks before being allowed to be baptised. It just happened because Philip was following Holy Spirit instructions!

Action

Read Acts 8:26-40 slowly asking yourself if you would have done what Philip did. Those were the days long before official “churches” began. There were no denominational divides. The disciples travelled obeying the instructions to “go and tell”. They were not to invite people to a church meeting, they were to travel, tell the story, and baptise those who believed!

Pray today for the world wide church to get back to Biblical instructions. Be prepared yourself to share the gospel with anyone you meet along life’s road.

Look for the “suddenlies” God has prepared for you.
