Suddenly – Day 2

Genesis 37:7

We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.

The Thought

This is the first mention in my Bible of the word “suddenly”. The occasion was when Joseph, who was one of the youngest and most spoilt of Jacob’s children, was recounting a dream he had had. Joseph was spoilt because he was the son of Jacob’s second wife Rachel. She was the wife Jacob had wanted to marry. But he was tricked by his father in law into marrying her elder sister (Genesis 29:16-26)! She was also the one who had found it very difficult to conceive (Genesis 30:1-2).

Joseph had become known as “the dreamer” because he often recounted his dreams. The dreams regularly suggested to him that he would be greater than the brothers who didn’t like him because he was obviously his father’s favourite!

If we read this story without knowing anything of the future for Joseph, we may agree he was the spoilt child of his father! Very soon after the dream related here, Joseph told his brothers of a second dream which had convinced him that one day he would have a high position in the land and they would be honouring him.

Reading on, Genesis tells us of many happenings in his life before the fulfilment of his dreams, and how he eventually made peace with his brothers.

Action

Read Genesis 37 today and pray for the relationships in your own family.

Think about your dreams, if you have them! Do you remember them? Do they affect your life in any way. Many prophets today are having dreams which are amazingly revelatory about our world.

Dreams feature a lot in our Bibles, and it is still a way God uses to speak to His people today. Dare to pray for a dream from Father God today.
