Samson – Day 7
Once dedicated to God, we can find ourselves being used in some strange situations. Often wondering how we got there! This was the case for the parents of Samson! God used different ways to bring the Israelites back to Him. In this case it was an enemy wife for Samson.
Judges 14:1
Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman. When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”
The Thought
In the western world where most of us reading this are living, this would not have been the way to choose a wife, even in our parents or grandparents generation. We can think from the wording here that Samson was a spoilt child whose parents gave him everything he wanted! Although in this situation, we read in the next verse that they resisted Samson’s request, preferring that he chose someone from their own people (v3) but Samuel’s insistence came from The Lord who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel (v4).
Once we have been dedicated to God, we can find ourselves being used in some strange situations. Often wondering how we got there! This was the case of Samson’s parents!
The Israelites were often oppressed by others. (They still are today in many parts of the world.) Often their oppression was caused by their own sin of turning away from God. He used different ways to bring them back to Him, and in this case it was an enemy wife for Samson.
In Job 8:4 we read When your children sinned against Him, He gave them over to the penalty of their sin. And in Psalm 81 we read of the Lord’s lament because Israel would not listen to Him.
Action
Read Psalm 81 today and apply The Lord’s complaint to your life wherever you are living at the moment. What can you do to change your area?
Pray for your government and local leaders to follow the Lord’s guidance in all their decision making. Ask God to prepare His candidates for the next local and national elections.
