Samson – Day 31

Judges 16:31

Then his brothers and his father’s whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had led Israel twenty years.

The Thought

We have no record until this verse of Samson having brothers. But it was often the case, (and still is) that if a couple have waited a long time for a first baby (often for God’s timing, and answer to prayer), and had a child with a specific destiny, that they have had other children to follow. That was the case with Samson and also Samuel, Hannah’s much wanted child who ruled Israel for 40 years (1 Samuel 2:21). Twice the length of time that Samson was the judge of Israel.

Political leaders today do not stay so long in office, at least in the western world. But there are royal families who have kept the throne for generations, often with individuals reigning for a very long time. The late Queen Elizabeth reigned for 70 years in Great Britain, and was a practicing Christian, a woman of prayer.

Samson was remembered for his brute strength and not for any wisdom as a judge. How will your present day rulers be remembered?

Action

Pray again today for the leaders of your country, for discernment in this turbulent world. Ask God to bless those leaders with wisdom, and to protect us all from people with a personal agenda.

Read 2 Samuel 7:16-29 for King David’s prayer, appreciating the fact that God had guided his life.

Reflect on your personal history today. Ask Jesus to help you to recognise some of the times He has already used you, and at the beginning of this new year challenge yourself with a determination to be more available to your Saviour Jesus Christ from now until December; living life more for Him.
