Samson – Day 23
This episode also makes me want to know more about bowstrings. Where does one buy them? And how are they made? They are made today mainly from artificial fibres. But in Biblical times they were made from animal gut. They are used for musical instruments and for bows and arrows.
Judges 16:8-9
Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them.
With men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.
The Thought
This episode in the lives of Samson and Delilah becomes more and more impossible to believe from our 21st century understanding and logic. It leaves me with many questions.
How did she tie up this strong man without him being aware of it? Did Samson know what she was doing and decide to play along with the game? He was confident that no harm would come to him from the bowstrings. And how did Delilah hide men in the room without her lover knowing they were there?
This episode also makes me want to know more about bowstrings. Where does one go to buy them? And how are they made? They are made today mainly from artificial fibres. But in Biblical times they were made from animal gut. Used for musical instruments and for cross bows as well as bows and arrows, their usage hasn’t changed too much over the thousands of years they have been used.
Action
Think today about some of the amazing things God has provided for our life on earth, and praise Him again for His marvellous creation, and also for the inspiration He gives to humans to create things. God was a creator at the beginning of time, and He still is.
Read Genesis 1 today and remind yourself that you are made in God’s image. If God was one who imagined and created things, then we can too.
Pray about how you might copy Him today.
