This post is Day 2 in a series of studies about “Remembering”. I strongly suggest you begin with the introduction to this study, please click here to read it.
Feel free to comment below with your own thoughts about each verse and how you will be acting on each thought. Also, if you haven’t yet signed up to receive the notifications of new studies, you can do that today. (The form is at the bottom of the page).
Remembering – Day 2
Adam and Eve must have seen that tree in the middle of the garden hundreds of times. But the had not really looked at it, because in their memories, they had heard the order from God to not touch it. Sadly Eve remembered too late not to eat from it.
Genesis 3:6
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
The Thought
There is no mention of remembering in this verse, but it is the first example of “remembering too late” the instructions which God gave to the first resident on earth. How easily we forget. Often because we are concentrating too much on what is visible. Adam was so impressed with the fruit which Eve had tasted, having been tempted by Satan, that he completely forgot the one rule God had given him! How sad! And the consequences were more than sad, they were disastrous! Not just for Adam and Eve, but for all mankind.
Both Adam and Eve must have seen that tree in the middle of the garden hundreds of times. But the had not really looked at it, because in their memories, they had heard the order from God to not touch it (Genesis 2:16-17). It wasn’t until the seductive demonic force began to tempt her that Eve recognised it was perfect for eating and looked delicious.
Like in the presence of the professional salesman; when some of us are “just looking”, and suddenly we end up buying something which we like, but which was not necessary, and certainly not our intention! In the a similar way Eve forgot that she was not supposed to eat that fruit.
Sadly she remembered too late!
Action
Ask yourself today how good you are at remembering things. Can you grade those things into essential / non-essential. For Eve, and Adam who also forgot what God had said, this lack of remembrance was drastic!
Read Genesis 2 & 3 today and contemplate the disaster that came from this memory blockage!
Ask God to help you to remember His word.
