Psalms 146-150 – Day 7

Psalm 146:10

The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.

The Thought

Forever is a very long time. We all understand that, but just in case we don’t, the psalmist adds for all generations! Often in the psalms we have repetitions of phrases and words or ideas. Maybe that was for musical reasons when they were written, but like in modern day poetry it is often to stress the point.

Many of us have had times in our lives when we have repeated ourselves in order to emphasise a certain point, and all of us know that it is essential to repeat things to children so that they remember and learn to live the way we want them to. Sometimes we have to repeat things to ourselves too!

Most of us know in our heart of hearts that Jesus will reign forever, but the Psalm writers didn’t know Jesus. They knew Father God who was the one who reigned in Heaven. (He still does).

The people of Israel knew their history, (they still do)! They continue to pass on the story of their ancestors to their children. Some translations of this verse, instead of for all generations say from generation to generation.

I prefer that expression, it makes it more personal, and reminds me that it is my job to tell the next generation about God’s blessings.

Action

Think today about how you heard about Jesus and all He has done. Who told you? Praise God for that person or that group today, and resolve to tell someone else of how your God is good and that Jesus is still alive and loves them.

If you have any relationships with the younger generation today, then resolve to tell them about your faith and who Jesus can be in their lives.
