Psalm 119 – Day 7

ד Daleth

Psalm 119:25-32

I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word. I gave an account of my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees. Cause me to understand the way of your precept that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me and teach me your law. I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, Lord; do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding.

The Thought

The last line of this part of our psalm surprises me. It is as though David was thanking God for broadening his understanding, through his suffering! It was a hard way to learn!

Instead of being angry with The Lord or disappointed with Him for the suffering he had been through, David was thanking God for helping him through it, even though it looked like it was not yet over! The first line is an appeal for rescue!

Often when things go wrong, we have a tendency, most of us, to be angry with God or at least frustrated with Him. We believe that once we have given our lives to Jesus, we have the right to an easy life, with very little suffering. Not true!

Jesus never promised anyone that. In fact, when he sent out the 12 disciples he warned them that life would be hard, sometimes very hard!

Action

Read Matthew 10 today and ask yourself what your reaction would be to suffering as the first disciples suffered. Many of us know of circumstances where people are punished by family members in the privacy of their own homes, for being believers and attending church. Pray for those people today.

Think and pray too for other countries where being a Christian believer is a dangerous thing.
