Psalm 119 – Day 6

Psalm 119:21-24

You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed, those who stray from your commands. Remove from me their scorn and contempt, for I keep your statutes. Though rulers sit together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees. Your statutes are my delight; they are my counsellors.

The Thought

Through much of David’s life he seems to have suffered from all sorts of opposition. First he was considered not important by his father and brothers (see Day 2), and later, one of his sons turned against him; Absalom, who had previously killed his brother Ammon, because he had committed a sin to which his father failed to react (2 Samuel 13:22-32; 2 Samuel 15).

Through many years David and Absalom were enemies, and the son of the king used much persuasion of the people turning them against his father the king.

It seems as though there was no way the psalmist would stray from the commands of God, he had seen too many answered prayers to ever do that. But when the criticism got to him and he was more than fed up with it, then He turned to The Lord.

But it is interesting that David doesn’t pray for his critics to be disciplined, harmed or even killed. He just prays for his own protection, so that their scorn and slander doesn’t affect him.

Action

Think, about your prayer life today. Can you immediately think of prayers God has answered for you? Do they give you confidence for the future?

Read 2 Samuel 15 & 18 and discover what happened to Absolom in the end, when his pride became the cause of his death. If you have time read all 4 chapters. Absalom’s life story is worthy of a being made into a motion picture!
