Psalm 119 – Day 19
Psalm 119:78-80
May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause; but I will meditate on your precepts. May those who fear you turn to me, those who understand your statutes. May I wholeheartedly follow your decrees, that I may not be put to shame.
The Thought
All of us have had periods in our life when we experienced irritation, anger, and frustration because of something somebody else did or said. David did too, and it seems as though he is cursing those who have hurt him, calling them arrogant, and praying for God to shame them.
That was not the way Jesus told us to react! You have heard that it was said ‘Love your neighbour and hate your enemy, but I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:43-45).
Jesus was speaking to thousands of interested people giving what we now know as the sermon on the mount, He gave His listeners what today we call The Lord’s Prayer, or The Our Father. All over the world people use that prayer today, but what we don’t take note of quite so much are the important verses which follow:- For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will nor forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15)!
An important place to start.
Action
Read through The Lord’s prayer (Matthew 6) slowly again today and dare to ask Jesus to show you if there are people from the past that you still need to forgive. Ask for His help in making that real, so that you feel the peace that only Jesus can give.
Forgiveness can bring great healing to both the forgiving and the forgiven.
