Idols – Day 4

Genesis 3:6

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

The Thought

No mention of idols here, but I want to suggest that Eve made an idol of herself at that moment when she gave in to the serpent. She was tempted and chose to go with the temptation, making what she wanted more important than what God had said! She sacrificed her future for a piece of fruit! How could she?

Adam and Eve didn’t know how privileged they were until that privilege of living in Eden was taken away. Only then did they realise how blessed they had been, and what they had lost!

Many of us across the world had not realised how privileged we were until the covid restrictions came into being. Suddenly we thought twice about going to the shops, having friends round for coffee, seeing family.

These past few years have made many of us think about what is important to us. I am not saying we have made idols of ourselves, but for many there has been a realisation of how me-centred we are. How we satisfy our own needs without really thinking about it.

Many of us can think of moments in the past when we have given in to self, and even like Eve taken somebody else with us into sin, preferring our own ideas and ignoring what God would say.

Action

Ask God to remind you today if you are guilty of making an idol of yourself. Praise Him that He loves and forgives you no matter what you are guilty of.

Read the first three chapters of Genesis today and think about the consequences of Eve’s sin!

Invite Jesus to draw you closer in your everyday life so that you don’t get trapped by sin and keep repeating the same mistakes.
