Idols – Day 21

1 Kings 14:7-9

Go tell Jereboam that this is what the Lord the God of Israel says, I raised you up from among the people … I tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you…; You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made for yourself other gods, idols made of metal; you have aroused my anger and turned your back on Me.

The Thought

What a terrible accusation Jereboam’s wife had to take home to her husband. It had been the king’s idea that his wife go in disguise to see the prophet Ahijah, but this king reckoned without our all seeing, all knowing Lord. This prophet had a good reputation, because he heard directly from the Lord, and on this occasion, God spoke to him before the queen arrived at his door. God even told the prophet that Ahijah would pretend to be someone else (verse 5)!

How amazing is our God!

Several years later in Biblical history, we read of another prophet, Elisha, who tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom (2 Kings 6:12). God is still the same today and knows everything we do every minute of our lives. It is better to be on His side than with those who are against Him!

Action

There is much happening in the world today, just as there was in Biblical times. There are wars and rumours of wars (Matthew 24:6).

We receive news from all over the world about what the leaders of different nations are doing, but is it the truth? Or is it what they want us to hear? Only God can tell us what is the truth, and there are many modern day prophets who are interpreting what He says, just as Ahijah, Elijah and Elisha did in Old Testament times.

Read 1 Kings 14 today and ask God to show you who to listen to for the truth in these troubled times.
